Funding programs and policies

Coordinators: Ulrich Martin (Hannover), and GSCN Acting President (ex officio)

Innovative and internationally visible basic and applied stem cell research requires a robust and sustainable funding. The aim of the GSCN working group: “Funding-programs and –policies” is to approach and interact with the appropriate funding bodies to develop proposals for new and appropriate funding programs. Funding agencies both at national and international levels will be invited for discussions and statements on new initiatives to support stem cell research.

In addition, potential partners (e.g. foundations) will be identified in the future to establish specific funding programs in the GSCN, e.g. PhD stipends and integration of young scientists.

Initial tasks and questions will be:

  • Identification of and contact of potential funding bodies
  • To establish expert advice on the latest developments in research and to identify suitable areas for funding
  • Which measures can be implemented to address translational approaches?
  • What are potential organizations for funding programs at the level of young scientists?

These and similar questions are of central importance for a targeted promotion of stem cell research in Germany in the future. Stem cell scientists organized within the GSCN will be more effective in the promotion of stem cell research as individuals.

Funding Opportunities & Programs

This funding call implements the High-Tech Agenda Germany (HTAD) by promoting biotechnology as a key enabling technology and advancing the development of biotechnologically produced foods through the cultivation of animal cells and precision fermentation.
See the BMFTR funding announcement and the information provided by Project Management Agency Jülich.)

IPCEI Biotechnology:
The European Union is currently developing a new Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) in the field of biotechnology. One of its three pillars focuses on the application of biotechnology for food and feed production. IPCEIs allow for state aid at a level that significantly exceeds that available through conventional funding programs. Their purpose is to enable highly innovative projects that would not be feasible through private financing alone.

Development's Pathway to Independence programme

The association ‘Development’ is now accepting applications for our 'Pathway to Independence' programme, aiming to support a small number of researchers in the fields of developmental biology, stem cells or regeneration as they transition from postdoc to independent group leader. It's the fourth year that we've run our successful programme, which offers mentoring, training, profile-raising and network opportunities. For more details on the programme, please visit our journal website:  https://journals.biologists.com/dev/pages/pifellows.

Funding of translational projects for therapies with gene- and cell-based products and associated diagnostics

The aim of this funding program was to support the translation of research results in the field of GCT and thus contribute to the implementation of a ➚ National Strategy for Gene- and Cell-based Therapies (GCT) in Germany. Currently, no calls for funding are open in this program.
